Tompkins-Webber Photography is a family business (Dick Tompkins and Bryna Webber, proprietors) that specializes in worldwide travel photography, emphasizing landscapes, nature, wildlife, and native peoples. The Badlands of South and North Dakota : The Badlands and Theodore Roosevelt National Parks, Custer State Park, and Mount Rushmore National Memorial in the Black Hills: four gems in a rugged country filled with wildlife and stark beauty. These photographs were taken in May 2012 in a limited exploration of the parks, mostly by auto. Home to abundant wildlife, the parks have the largest expanse of protected prairie ecosystem and one of the world's richest mammalian fossil beds. The remarkable canyons, spires, buttes, and wind/water sculpted terrain make for fabulous landscapes as the light changes during the day. As photographers, we were entranced by the beauty of the land and only wished that we had more time to take advantage of the changing light and the many stunning vistas. And the wildlife was extensive: antelope, bison, rabbits, prairie dogs, bighorn sheep, eagles, and vultures that were easily seen, as well as the multiple creatures (especially the rattlesnakes) that were less conspicuous but part of the allure of this magnificent country. It's a place well worth time, energy, and lots of gigabytes of photographs.

Southern Iceland from Land and Air : Bryna and I had the privilege of traveling in Iceland with a group of experienced, friendly, and skilled photographers led by Art Wolfe and Gavriel Jecan. The photos you will see in this gallery and the three others featured alongside will give you a good sense of the beauty of this wonderful land. For those of you who are skeptics about the use of digital enhancement techniques, let me assure you that the colors and shapes are real and dependent only on the ambient lighting at the time of the photograph being shot. Some of you will recognize the richness as similar to Kodachrome film, which I used exclusively during my years of film photography.

In September, 2012, we had the fortune of exploring and photographing the Atacama desert of Chile and the Altiplano of Bolivia. Rugged, desolate, and incredibly beautiful, these are photographers' paradises. If you have the chance and can withstand the often rugged conditions (roads going to 16,500 feet altitude, few tourist amenities, and harsh weather), this is a part of the world that needs to be seen before climate change takes its toll.

Patagonia and the National Parks of Argentina and Chile : Our trip to Patagonia and two of the national parks of Chile and Argentina was inspired by our friend, photographer Art Wolfe, whose sensational photographs gave us a sense of the beauty to be found in this part of the world. Once we arrived and began exploring we found that Art had provided us with only a taste and that the region's natural beauty was never ending and stunning, enhanced by the constant changes in light, clouds, and vistas. Princess Louisa Inlet and British Columbia's Inside Passage, 2010 : The photographs in this gallery were taken in August, 2010, on a sailing vessel traveling up the Inside Passage of British Columbia to Princess Louisa Inlet, one of the most beautiful places in Canada. Selections of the photographs have been published in "Sea, Sky, Mountains, Light" (authors Dick Tompkins and Bryna Webber) available at Blurb.com. The weather and light conditions on the trip varied enormously, providing ideal conditions for photographing the fabulous sea/landscape. China Changing, 2011 : In November 2011, after a 26 year gap, I returned to China to see for myself the changes. Let me first say that I would not trade our democratic way of life in the U.S.with all its marvels and messiness. However, I was thunderstruck by how much can be accomplished in only a quarter of a century, under the Chinese political system. Edicts trump the U.S. way of getting something done. It is a powerful sight to see. In 1986, there were almost no cars. Overwhelmingly, people were on bikes. There were a few trucks, some buses, fewer taxis and almost no private cars in the big cities. In 2011, it has almost totally flipped. There are almost no bikes, though we saw lots of scooters and motorcycles along with a zillion cars. And, of course, there are many new trains and subway systems. I was amazed at the amount of new construction, in high rise apartments and in business towers. We were greeted with stunningly creative architecture. As we moved to the outskirts of cities, we saw mile after mile of attractive residential high rises. The stunning condos in the cities, especially along the waterways, are incredibly expensive but there is no shortage of wealthy Chinese people able to buy them. I personally feel that if you picked up Beijing and put it anywhere in the U.S., it would be the best looking city in our country. Another major visible change is the appearance of the people. In ’86, a large percentage of people wore the traditional gray or navy ‘uniforms’ that had been adopted during the Mao years. There are almost none left. The Chinese people dress very much like we do in the U.S. I hope you will enjoy this photographic odyssey to modern China and perhaps be stimulated to travel there on your own. Bryna Webber

Africans 2010 : On the road and in the villages of Tanzania and Kenya we saw the grinding poverty that is endemic in these countries. It was a real contrast to the beauty of the national parks and the magnificence of the animals that live in these protected enclaves. Although our highest priority for the trip was spending time in villages to photograph and meet native people, we were frustrated by the obstruction of our safari company, despite guarantees made on the front end of the trip's planning. It semed to us that the tour company and its surrogates in the field were worried that our experience would be harmful to their business, perhaps by showing the contrast beween "tourist" and "native" sites. So we were pleased that we were able to visit one village in Tanzania for about two hours and to be the guests of one Masai village in Kenya (just outside of the Masai Mara Park boundaries). As wily photographers are wont to do, we also took as many photographs "on the fly" as we could and succeeded in producing some documentation to support our concern about the crushing poverty that Kenyans and Tanzanians have to endure.
